Screen time
Why screen time rules fail
The meltdown happens at "turn it off", not during the show. Give a 5-minute warning and a next activity to walk into. Model it yourself: if phones come to dinner, the rule is just noise. Protect sleep, meals, outdoor play and real conversation first.
Manners
Manners aren't taught in one lecture
Be consistent, so kids know what to expect. Model the magic words. Praise the good ("I loved how you waited for your turn") instead of correcting every slip. Start with five: please and thank you, letting others finish, table manners, knocking first, covering coughs.
Calm discipline
Discipline without yelling
For "just five more minutes!": ask "What time is it?", name the rule, acknowledge the feeling ("I know it's hard to stop"), then hold steady. Say it once, stay calm, and let the routine do the work.
Empathy
Beyond "sorry"
A forced apology ends the moment but teaches lip service. Try asking "How do you think that felt for them?" and give your child a way to make it right.
Safety
Safe, not scared
Teach boundaries, not fear. Safe adults ask adults for help, never children. No secret gifts. Trust that "gut feeling". And remember No-Go-Tell: say no, go somewhere safe, tell a trusted adult.
Responsibility
Help at home without shouting
Get to eye level and lower your voice. Offer choices so children feel ownership. Make routines automatic, let natural consequences teach, and praise effort over perfection.
